Become an Election Captain & Knock Your Block!

Turnout for this fall's Midterm Election in Philly is crucial to winning our state offices, and for sending a message to Trump's goons that we will not be intimidated. That's why PNN is working with our friends at Working Families Party to reconstitute our Election Captains program, and you're invited!

The Election Captain Program is a paid program (you can donate the money back, if you choose) that will engage voters on your block - roughly 60 doors - with three passes:

• In Pass One, everyone will be divided into two groups - Reliable Voters who we'll make an organizing ask; and Unreliable Voters with whom we'll have a persuasion conversation.

• In Pass Two, you will ask voters to sign a Commitment Card demanding that our elected officials Tax the Rich.  

• In Pass Three, you will target voters to Make a Plan to Vote.

On Election Day, you'll spend the morning (7AM-10AM) at your polling place handing our sample ballots; in the afternoon, you'll reach out via text or call to those voters who did not yet cast their vote as a final reminder.

Write Postcards to Win Back the State Senate

Tuesday, September 8th, 1PM-3PM, Allens Lane Train Station

We had a great turnout for our Postcards to Win the State Senate these past Tuesdays. Join us again this week on the grounds of the Allens Lane Train Station located at 7200 Cresheim Road starting at 1PM.

We'll be targeting vulnerable incumbents who have voted time and again against helping Philly - things like refusing to raise the minimum wage, tying the hands of our District Attorney, or refusing to provide sufficient funding to our public schools.

Here is an opportunity to stretch our influence beyond the City's boundaries to positively influence races elsewhere in Pennsylvania. Join us as we get into some "Good Trouble" by writing postcards to win back our state senate.

"Dismantling Detention" Teach-In

Thursday, September 10th, 6PM-8:30PM, 6511 Lincoln Drive

With the threat of ICE violating our rights even further with detention facilities that you would expect to find in a war-torn rogue nation, it is important to understand what they are doing and what we can do to protect ourselves. That is why PNN has joined with our allies in NW Philly to sponsor "Dismantling Detention", a 2 1/2 hour teach-in that will discuss the harsh realities of detention, share some wins, and strategize community actions that will help to dismantle this prison-for-profit system. Be ready for panel discussions, breakouts of a variety of topics, and action steps.

Unity Day & Car Show

Saturday, September 5th, 10AM-4PM, 550 North Broad Street

Join neighbors for the annual Unity Day & Car Show hosted by the 35th District Police. This is a family event with food and refreshments, music and entertainment, including a showing of classic and custom cars. There will also be free community resources.

Beware of MyChart Medicare Scam

Philadelphia-area health systems are warning residents to beware of an online phishing scam that mimics MyChart, the secure online patient portal used by most leading health systems.

The scam involves emails and text messages that encourage people to claim a “MyChart Medicare Kit” by clicking on the embedded link to complete a survey. The resource kit is fictional, and clicking the malicious link could give hackers access to their MyChart portal, which stores identification information, including birth dates and addresses, and private health details, such as medications, medical conditions, and doctor conversations.

What to do if you suspect you've gotten a phishing email:

1. Avoid clicking links in emails and text messages. Instead, go directly to the website or mobile application.

2. Do not “unsubscribe” from emails that you suspect could be phishing attempts, as the “unsubscribe” link could also be malicious. Instead, delete the email.

This Week in History

Sep 5, 1882 – First Labor Day. On this day, 10,000 workers marched in NYC to celebrate the rights of workers. Two years later, Congress recognized it as a national holiday.

Sep 7, 1813 – "Uncle Sam" is Born. Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, NY, who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army with “U.S.” for United States, but soldiers began referring to the grub as “Uncle Sam’s.” A local newspaper picked up on the story and Uncle Sam eventually gained widespread acceptance as the nickname for the U.S. government.

Sep 9, 1971 – Attica Uprising. Prisoners took over Attica Prison in upstate New York to protest deplorable living conditions. Four days later, the governor ordered the prison stormed resulting in the deaths of 33 people. The uprising led to changes in the prison system and the beginning of the prisoner's rights movement.
