How Did You Get on Our List?

Our friends at Philly Science Action, Green Philly and Skype a Scientist didn't have a way to get a petition to everyone who wanted to protect the Academy of Natural Sciences from closing, and they asked us to help. So we created the petition you signed to save the Academy. Thank you!

Here's the rub: The tool we used for the petition creates a record of each person who signs up. To date, more than 120,000 people have signed the petition - from all over the world! This put us in the uncomfortable position of having to handle way more folks than we planned - many of whom have no roots here in Philly.

So, if you are not interested in receiving our newsletter we understand and apologize for the inconvenience. It seems that all of us are bombarded daily with emails and texts and phone calls and other solicitations seemingly coming out of nowhere because we once signed something that was important to us.

This often happens because some organizations sell your information for money. To be clear, PNN DOES NOT PASS YOUR INFORMATION TO ANY OTHER ORGANIZATION. Frankly, we're also sick of being bombarded by all those unsolicited communications. You can unsubscribe from our newsletter by clicking the link at the bottom.

That said, we hope you'll stay. There is a lot for us to do in the coming year - for instance, we anticipate that the current regime will not be happy about the election results this November and will double down on authoritarianism.

That's why we will be providing updates on what you can do and we welcome your input. We'll also be offering opportunities for you to participate in democracy - rallies, town halls, teach-ins, movie nights, canvasses, phone banks and other events that we think you'll find interesting or important.

Each week, we send a Tactical Tuesday email letting you know what you can do this week to make a difference. Every Friday, we send our big newsletter with all sorts of upcoming events. Our goal is to engage folks who care about what is happening in our city and our world, and to make our newsletter entertaining and informative. So, if you have an idea or an event you'd like to share, let us know!

South Philly Canvass for Project Beloved Community

Saturday, October 17th, 11AM-2PM, 1701 South 15th Street

Join PNN and coalition partners at DiSilvestro Rec Center to spread the word in South Philadelphia, the home turf of the Council President. We'll canvass neighbors to sign a petition in support of PBC and turn out to other town halls in the Fall and winter so that this campaign becomes a priority issue in 2027. We'll pair you up with experienced canvassers if this is your first time door-knocking, and we'll offer training before we hit the streets.

In addition to our Town Hall, we are spreading info on Project Beloved Community door-to-door. We'll canvass neighbors to sign a petition in support of the Project and ti turn out to other town halls to learn about, and then make this campaign a priority in 2027. We'll pair you up with experienced canvassers if this is your first time door-knocking, and we'll offer training before we hit the streets.

Write Postcards to Win Back the State Senate

Tuesday, October 13th, 1PM-3PM, Allens Lane Train Station

We have been having great turnouts for our Postcards to Win the State Senate on Tuesdays. Join us again this week on the grounds of the Allens Lane Train Station located at 7200 Cresheim Road starting at 1PM.

We'll be targeting vulnerable incumbents who have voted time and again against helping Philly - things like refusing to raise the minimum wage, tying the hands of our District Attorney, or refusing to provide sufficient funding to our public schools.

Here is an opportunity to stretch our influence beyond the City's boundaries to positively influence races elsewhere in Pennsylvania. Join us as we get into some "Good Trouble" by writing postcards to win back our state senate.

If you would like to be part of our postcard-writing team, click below to sign up. If you can't make it to today's postcard event, but want to join us another time, please use the link below to sign up.

I'll Write Postcards

Public Banking Conference in Philly

Thursday, October 22nd thru Saturday, October 24th

Our city will be the host for "Public Banking for Public Prosperity" held by the Public Banking Institute this October. This is an opportunity to learn all the ways that a Philly Public Bank can used to build wealth in our city rather than hand over our tax dollars to Wall Street.

The conference will emphasize strategic collaboration, unified action, and practical pathways for public bank adoption - building momentum for a nationwide transformation in how public money is managed and how local economies can thrive. The goal is to catalyze the next phase of the public banking movement at a moment when questions of economic justice and democratic resilience are reshaping the national conversation.
