Airy Supper SessionWednesday, June 17th, 5PM-9PM, 7236 Germantown Ave (Please note that the planners have moved last Wednesday's Supper Session to June 17th.) A few times a year, Mt. Airy residents are treated to a "Supper Session" along Germantown Ave. Along with good food and company, folks have the opportunity to take part in our democracy by registering to vote (Yes, there are still folks in Mt. Airy who are not yet registered!). The task of helping people to register is done by PNN member Lori Jardines and her team. She is asking for some help this year, and it's an easy thing to learn and great thing to do! If you'd like to help please click here to email her for details. Legislative News: PA House to Tax Digital Ads Good news on the legislative front! The PA House of Representatives voted 139-63 to expand the Gross Receipts Tax to include Digital Ads - those ads that mysteriously pop-up trying to sell you something that you just searched for on the Internet. Digital ads are currently not taxed, but they represent billions of dollars in revenue to Big Tech companies. This tax of 5% is projected to generate $200 million in additional revenue for the state annually, and it represents a significant victory for progressives, led by the PAYBAC Table, of which PNN is a member. The tax is a cornerstone of the larger "Tax Billionaires, Fund PA" that will raise as much as $6 billion in new revenue by closing corporate tax loopholes, taxing billionaires’ unearned income, and requiring Big Tech to pay taxes on the digital ads that profit off Pennsylvania consumers and their data. So far, 48 legislators are co-sponsors of this legislative package. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Experts Panel: Healthcare Profits Over PeopleMonday, June 22nd, 7PM-8:30PM, Free Library of Springfield Township Dr. Walter Tsou, Philadelphia Medical Society President and PNN Steering Committee member, joins ally Robin Stelly of Pennsylvania Health Access Network, and Dr. Mark Lopatin to discuss how corporate medicine and other forces are removing humanity from our healthcare and what we can do to fix this deliberately broken system. The panel will be hosted by our friends at Social Justice Indivisible and take place on the evening of June 22nd at the Free Library of Springfield Township, located at 8900 Hawthorne Lane, down the street from LaSalle College High School in Wyndmoor, PA. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Cindy Bass ShenanigansOn Monday evening, Ward 22 Leader Cindy Bass opened the required Ward Meeting to decide upon who would be the next Ward Leader. Five minutes later, she closed it. In between, Bass called for a "voice vote" and declared herself the winner. When 26 committeepersons objected and demanded a roll call vote, she rejected the motion and adjourned the meeting. This is heavy-handed, dictatorial behavior that should have consequences. Some committeepersons have officially objected to this behavior and there is a hearing on Sunday. In Tuesday's Inquirer, Party Chair Bob Brady said that if a committeeperson calls for a roll-call vote to ensure greater accuracy, then the request must be honored.
