Environmental Forum Tomorrow, Upcoming Action Committee Calls and More…

This week’s newsletter is one of action as we provide you with opportunities to put your activist spirit to work, starting with tomorrow’s Environmental Action Forum. If you haven’t yet connected with an Action Committee, then consider joining us at one of our welcome meetings this week. We’ll begin planning our work around housing, electoral work and economic justice. You can also sign up for Action Committees in healthcare and education.

Join Our Environmental Action Forum Tomorrow!

Activists are signing up to join our 2021 Environmental Action Forum taking place tomorrow, Saturday, February 6th from 4-5:30PM. Christine Knapp, the Director of the Office of Sustainability, will provide us with an overview of the environmental work that needs to be done in our City.

You’ll hear from Action Coordinators in four main areas – Energy, Waste, Public Health and Community Education. Then you’ll have an opportunity to share your thoughts in our breakout groups as we talk about action-ready projects that could make a real difference in our City’s approach to Climate Change.

Finally, we’ll explore how you can become involved with fellow activists in Working Groups to tackle these issues. We’ll send you the Zoom link in a welcome email, as well as a reminder tomorrow.

This Week in History

Feb. 5, 1919 – United Artists Formed. Fed up with the unfair domination of the film industry by monied interests, Hollywood heavyweights Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith joined forces to create their own film studio, which they called the United Artists Corporation.

Feb. 9, 1971 – Paige Inducted to Hall of Fame. Pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige broke the color barrier by becoming the first Negro League veteran to be nominated to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Feb. 11, 1990 – Mandela is Freed. Nelson Mandela, leader of the movement to end South African apartheid, was released from prison after 27 years. He went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize and become the first black president of South Africa.

Thanks for your activism!

Tim Brown, Organizing Director
