August 23, 2010 Saving the Germantown YGermantown NN Members Play Key RoleTwo years ago the venerable YMCA of Germantown, established in 1871, was on the ropes, ready to become yet another Germantown community treasure that passed away from neglect and lack of effective leadership. But that is when several members of the Germantown NN chapter "took it on" as a community project. The Y had to be saved.... Y to Celebrate Re-Opening Sept 11th after Two YearsOn September 11 the facility will reopen in better condition than before it closed. This outcome is in stark contrast with the fate of the former YWCA of Germantown located just one block away, which has been a derelict shell for several years. The fate of the two institutions illustrates the difference in outcome when there is effective community mobilization and when there is not. The Germantown NN chapter is proud to have been part of this success story. The YMCA had been our monthly meeting place from our founding in 2005 until a flood caused by a failed sprinkler system forced closure of the building in 2008, so we knew first hand the important role the Y played in the community. Several NN members supported the rescue project in every way - from helping the membership in the strategic renewal of the nonprofit board to repainting the walls. In the process NN members have made strong alliances with progressive forces in the community. A focus on local issues was a direction which the Germantown NN chapter decided upon following the 2008 election cycle. The Chapter felt that was the way to build long-term credibility in the community. As this major accomplishment has been reached, the chapter will re-examine organizing models and looks forward to participating in the POW conference on September 25th.
