June 18, 2010 Stop Raids on Social Security, Medicare and MedicaidForum Seeks Ideas on Budget Cutting -- How's This: Stop Bloated War SpendingBy Stan Shapiro, Marc Stier On June 26, thousands of concerned citizens from across the country will assemble in town halls for the ostensible purpose of finding "common ground on the tough choices about our federal budget.” However it is clear that the real purpose of the event is to spread the message that our country is in jeopardy because Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid cost too much.
Events are sponsored by the supposedly independent non-partisan group America Speaks, which will report results to Congress and the White House. However the group was clearly initiated for the purpose of ringing alarm bells about programs that sustain millions of our people. We do not intend to allow this scheme to unravel the New Deal to proceed unchallenged.
The location for the Philly event is 3801 Market Street, First District Plaza. We will be gathering at 10 AM outside the venue to hand out flyers with our message and to be sure that the press knows that we showed up to represent progressive values. ...Continued from home pageCan You Help Save the New Deal? It's Under ThreatThis event is sponsored by many groups that have as their objective the destruction of programs dating back to the New Deal that have fostered a decent way of life for millions of Americans. We must say loudly that it's not the legacy of FDR that threatens the economy, it's tax cuts for the rich, and out of control, unnecessary war spending. Will you join us at First District Plaza to make sure our message is heard? Help Us Spread Our MessageThe leaflets we hand out will give participants the tools they need to speak up.
Can you be a voice for progressive budget priorities for an hour on June 26? Please drop a note to Stan Shapiro at shapsj@comcast.net to let us know that you’ll be there to hand out flyers to Forum participants. We'll get back to you with more details of the event and where to gather.
And if you can spare an afternoon to be a force for preservation of basic standards of decency and fairness for poor, working, and older Americans, sign up to attend the Forum here.
Let’s send a message to Congress and the President.
• More jobs, fewer bombs. We need to eliminate wasteful Pentagon spending and invest in job creation to put America back to work.
• Main Street before Wall Street. We must close corporate tax loopholes, allow the 2001/2003 tax breaks for the rich to expire and restore the estate tax.
• Pursue an opportunity agenda. Education, health care, broadband build-out, jobs.
This is important. Democrats, as well as Republicans in Washington need to get the message that we're watching and we will not sit idly by while the work of the last 80 years gets rolled back. Join us on Saturday June 26 to help us send that message.
